BOCOTE
Species: Cordia spp
Bocote, which comes from Mexico and Central America, is colored greenish yellow to golden brown with dark stripes. Often highly figured with "eyes." Hard and heavy. Appears oily with a medium luster. Takes a natural polish. Not difficult to work. Finishes very smoothly. Bocote is typically used for furniture, novelties, accessories, and turning.
BLOODWOOD
Species: Brosimum rubescens
Extraordinarily hard, dense, and tight grained. Bloodwood often holds a lot of tension in the wood, making it unstable and prone to twist or cup. It's best used in small pieces. However, woodworkers like the way it finishes and polishes, and the vivid color is always eye catching.
BUBINGA
Species: Guibourtia spp
This West African hardwood is also known as African Rosewood. Color varies from red to brown or violet with streaks or lines of dark purple. Moderately hard and heavy, medium textured with somewhat wavy grain. Works with ease and takes a lustrous finish. Used for furniture, cabinets and interior detail work.
CHERRY
Species: Eastern Prunus Serotina
The close even texture and beauty of Cherry have made it synonymous with fine furniture since colonial times. Although grown in widely separated areas of the world, our own American Black Cherry is matchless for quality.
COCOBOLO
Species: Dalbergia retusa
Harvested in the Pacific Regions of Central America, extending from Southern Mexico to Panama. Color varies from a deep rich orange-red with black striping or mottle figure, has a “cinnamon-like” odor. Excellent machining characteristics. Natural oils give the wood a high polish. Used for knife handles, inlay, jewelry boxes, turnery and musical instruments.
GENUINE MAHOGONY
Species: Swietenia macrophylla
The King of Hardwoods; Genuine Mahogany has been for centuries the “luxury” hardwood for the manufacture of fine furniture. It is also especially desirable for use in all woodworking projects requiring stability and fine workability.
GONCALO
Species: Astronium spp
This Brazilian hardwood is light golden brown to reddish brown with blackish streaks, producing a beautiful striped or mottled figure. Machines well, finishes very smoothly, and takes a high natural polish. Used for archery bows, billiard cues, furniture, cabinetry, flooring and turnery or carving.
GRANADILLO
Species: Platymiscum yucatanum
Granadillo is a great substitute wood for Cocobolo or Pau Ferro Rosewood. Used as both a hobby wood and instrument wood. This central american wood is very hard, heavy and dense, and is not recommended for a beginning woodworker.
JATOBA
Species: Hymeneae courbaril
A fine Brazilian hardwood. Color ranges from orange-brown to russet, turning dark reddish brown with a golden luster after finishing. A dense heavy wood with straight or interlocked grain. Used for cabinets and millwork, construction and flooring.
KATALOX
Species: Swartzia spp.
Expect a hard, yet extraordinarily beautiful wood. It's tight grained and dense which makes it wonder to polish in highly decorative projects. Freshly cut the wood is a deep vivid purple, but with a finish it will change to coffee-brown color.
MORADO
Species: Machaerium spp.
Its dark, flowing fine grain provides a luxurious pattern. And the texture is so fine that you'll enjoy working the wood with hand tools and giving it a gorgeous polish. Expect a stunning likeness to dark, rich rosewood.
PAUDAUK
Species: Pterccarpus soyauxii
Central and West Tropical Africa, also called camwood. Heartwood is a vivid orange-red, toning down to dark purple-brown with red streaks upon exposure. Machines very easily, nails, screws, glues, and polishes very well, and an excellent finish is obtainable. Excellent for high end joinery, furniture, cabinets, and turnery.

ROASTED WALNUT
Species: Eastern Black Juglans nigra
Roasted Walnut is heat-treated Walnut that is a consistent dark-brown throughout the board.
SAPELE
Species: Pterccarpus soyauxii
Sapele heartwood is a medium to fairly dark reddish brown to purplish brown; sapwood whitish or pale yellow, distinct. Sapele is moderately durable and used for hardwood flooring, furniture and cabinetwork, decorative moldings, joinery, paneling.
SHEDUA
Species: Guibourtia ehie
West African Shedua is also known as Amazaque. Color ranges from yellow to dark brown with almost black veining; its related botanically to Bubinga. Shedua is heavy with a medium texture and interlocking grain. Resembles Walnut, but has a fairly regular stripe. Works and glues very well.
WENGE
Species: Millettia laurentii
Imported from the Republic of the Congo, Wenge is dark brown with fine close blackish veining. Machines well to a smooth finish. Hard and heavy, with a coarse texture. Used for inlay, turnery, cabinetry and furniture.
WHITE MAPLE
Species: Eastern Hard Acer saccharum
Maple needs no introduction as it has long been one of our most popular hardwoods. Also known as “Sugar Maple,” this fine white stock is selected especially for lack of mineral streaks. Many of our stores also stock Curly, Quilted and Birdseye Maple.
ZIRICOTE
Species: Cordia Dodecandra
Ziricote is an exotic wood native to the Central American countries of Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. It is a hard, dense wood, with a medium texture. The color ranges from reddish brown to dark brown with unusual black streaks. Ziricote is excellent for wood turning and carving, as well as knife handles, furniture, and cabinets. It works very nicely and finishes well to a high luster.
BLOODWOOD

Bloodwood is an exotic South American import that continues to grow in popularity here in the states. It’s dark, savory red tones, untypically, do not fade, mute or darken much over time. It is known for its “satiny,” highly-chatoyant finish. While the heartwood typically is comprised of red hues, it is known to have variances ranging from oranges to pale yellows, interspersed.
